Traveling to Thailand: Tips for Your First Visit

Thailand, where to begin, I guess, right at the beginning. When I first got to Thailand, I flew from Vancouver, BC, to Bangkok, and there were two things I was not prepared for. The first of which was the travel day; I mean, my god, I didn’t think I was ever going to get there from my many hours on planes, as well as some painfully long layovers. I thought I’d give up before the trip even started. One thing I’ll recommend about these long flights is to download lots of movies, bring a book, and consider getting something to help you sleep; you’ll thank me later. The other thing I wasn’t ready for was the heat! I went from a cold winter, where no day was warmer than 5 degrees Celsius, to hopping off a plane in Bangkok, where the average day was around 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. To paint a picture, I was a white boy just finishing up his winter, entering a country where I was forced to take multiple showers a day and spend hours at a time in AC rooms to avoid getting heat stroke. All that being said, I had finally made it; I was in Southeast Asia like I had been planning, and my trip had begun.

My time in Thailand was focused primarily on the South, so if you are looking for info on Northern Thailand, maybe skip this section. I had five main spots I went to during my trip to Thailand: Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao, and Phuket. I’m going share my experiences in these areas in my other posts.
